Scrolling through Instagram; it is impossible to avoid a carefully filtered, ever so artfully arranged platter of food. It appears we simply must share each moment of our culinary experiences with friends, family and strangers. And while I am trying to avoid this on my Instagram at the very least, wondering around a sunny London found me one of the most Instagrammable places the city holds- Peggy Porschen Cakes. Hashtag no filter.
Cupcakes have taken the world by storm; and Peggy Porschen has most definitely capitalised on that fact. Her pretty as a picture bakery stands rather impressively in all its bubblegum pink glory amongst the neat rows of Belgravia. White tables occupied with Londoners, all dabbing at the cake crumbs left on their saucers. The overwhelming smell of baking inviting one in with the promise of only the finest cupcakes.
Despite the minuscule size, inside it resembles something of a library combined with a kitchen that only the girliest of us could dream up. Crystallised chandeliers add a touch of elegance. Ceiling high shelves are piled with cookery books and baking supplies. Flowers adorn the room, adding that extra touch of feminine guilty pleasure. And then of course, is the humungous cake fridge absolutely laden with all the classical favourites one could expect: vanilla, chocolate, carrot, strawberry, red velvet… But these little beauties are far from boring. Each one has been baked to perfection and lovingly topped with a swirl of buttercream. It would almost be a crime to eat them, but they are irresistible. Melt in the mouth and just the right amount of sweetness.
There is only one word to describe the cupcakes of Peggy Porschen, and that is heavenly. Hummingbird Bakery can keep the reputation. Because for the modern princess, Peggy Porschen is the first port of call.
